Private Photos Showed Up While Screen Sharing. How Do You Stop It?

Updated Oct 30, 2026 4 min read
Quick answer

Share a single window instead of your whole screen, turn on a Focus mode so notifications stay quiet, and close private apps before you present. Most Mac accidents come from sharing the full desktop. A vault can also keep its windows out of screen sharing, where macOS honors that setting.

The situation

You share your screen in a meeting. A message preview slides in, or a Photos window sits behind your slides.

The fix is one habit and three settings. Call apps differ in how they pick what to share, so test the result before the real meeting.

What actually protects you

  1. Share one window

In your call app, choose to share a single window or app rather than the entire screen. Look at the share picker before you click, because its wording differs by app.

  2. Pause notifications while you share

Open System Settings > Notifications and find Show Notifications: when mirroring or sharing the display. Choose Notifications Off. Apple describes this setting as pausing or allowing notifications when you mirror or share the display.

  3. Turn on a Focus

Turn on a Focus, such as Do Not Disturb, from Control Center, so notifications do not show. Click Control Center in the menu bar, click the Focus section, then click a Focus. Apple says you can choose how long it stays on.

  4. Hide message previews

In Notifications settings, set Show previews to Never. Apple lists Always, When Unlocked and Never. When Unlocked still shows previews while you are logged in.

  5. Close private apps

Quit Photos, Messages and your vault before you start. If you opened the Hidden album, choose View > Hide Hidden Photo Album in Photos first. See the Hidden album guide.

  6. Tidy the Desktop

Move private files off the Desktop. Desktop icons show when you share the whole screen.

  7. Test the share

Do a test share with a friend or an empty meeting first.

What the built-in steps do not cover

  • Alerts that ignore a Focus. Apple says critical alerts show even when a Focus is on. Time-sensitive alerts show only if the Focus allows them.
  • Anything inside the shared window. A browser window shows every tab and bookmark. A file picker lists folder and file names. Choose the file before the call starts.
  • Recording. The call app, or a viewer, may record. Apple says System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording lists the apps that can record your screen. Review that list.
  • Viewers' own tools. No setting on your Mac stops a person on the call from capturing what you share on their side.

How to test it

  1. Start a meeting alone or with a friend and share the single window.
  2. Send yourself a message from your phone. No banner should appear on the shared view.
  3. Switch windows during the share and ask what the other side sees. Your call app may offer a preview or a recording to check.
  4. Repeat the test after any macOS update, because settings and call apps change.

A five-item checklist

  • Share a window, not the screen.
  • Focus mode is on.
  • Private apps are closed.
  • The Desktop is tidy.
  • You tested the share.

Where a vault fits

Hidden Folder asks macOS to exclude its windows from screenshots and screen sharing. This is best effort, and it depends on the macOS version and on the capture tool, so test it with your own call app. Read screen-capture protection. Files in the vault are not in your Photos library, so a Photos window cannot show them. Lock the vault with ⌘L before you share. See how to hide photos on Mac.

Frequently asked questions

Does sharing one window hide everything else?

Other windows are not shared, but notifications can still show on top depending on your call app. Use a Focus mode too.

Will a vault window show on Zoom?

It should not where macOS honors the setting. Test it. Behaviour can differ between macOS versions and tools.

Can I blur private details in a screenshot?

Yes. Use the free blur and pixelate tool in your browser.

Where is the notification setting for screen sharing?

Open System Settings > Notifications and look for the option about mirroring or sharing the display. Apple says it pauses or allows notifications while you share.

How do I stop message text appearing in a banner?

Set Show previews to Never in Notifications settings. Apple says When Unlocked still shows previews while you are logged in.

Which apps can record my screen?

See System Settings > Privacy & Security > Screen & System Audio Recording. Apple says each listed app has a switch that turns its recording ability on or off.
