Photo Metadata Remover: Strip Location and EXIF Data
Photos from phones often carry hidden data: the GPS spot where you took them, the camera model and the time. This tool shows what a JPEG, PNG or WebP file contains and saves a clean copy without it. The work happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
How it works, and why nothing is uploaded
The page reads your file with the browser's own file API. It does not send it anywhere. A short script walks through the file structure and writes a new copy that leaves out the metadata blocks. You can check this: open your browser's network tab while you use the tool. No request carries your photo.
What is removed
- JPEG: EXIF (including GPS), XMP, IPTC and Photoshop blocks, comments, thumbnails and any data after the end of the image.
- PNG: text blocks, EXIF, timestamps and unknown extra blocks.
- WebP: EXIF and XMP blocks.
What is kept
- The picture itself, byte for byte. Nothing is re-compressed, so quality does not drop.
- The colour profile, so colours do not shift.
- Optionally the rotation tag, so the photo stays upright.
What it does not do
- HEIC files from iPhones are not supported yet. Convert to JPEG first, for example in Preview.
- It cannot remove what is in the picture. A street sign or a face still shows.
- Other apps may have already uploaded the original. Strip before you share.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool upload my photo?
No. Everything runs in your browser. You can confirm with your browser's network inspector.
Does removing metadata lower the quality?
No. JPEG, PNG and WebP files are rewritten without the metadata blocks. The image data is not re-compressed.
Why does my photo still rotate correctly?
By default the tool keeps only the rotation tag. Untick the option to remove it as well.
Can I check a file before I remove anything?
Yes. The tool lists what it found, including GPS coordinates, before you download the clean copy.
Does iMessage or Instagram strip location data already?
Some services do. Rules differ and change. Strip it yourself before sharing if it matters.
