Hide Photos With a Calculator App: Steps and Risks
To hide photos with a calculator app, install one from an official store, set a secret code, import the photos and delete the originals from your gallery. Check the app first: who made it, how it stores files and how you recover access. A calculator disguise hides the app, not the photos.
Phone steps follow Apple and Google help pages, and menu names differ by version. Mac steps use macOS 14 and later names.
Check the app before you install
This guide is general. It does not recommend or describe a specific app. Spend two minutes on the store page first.
- Developer. Is there a named developer and a real website with a privacy policy?
- App Privacy. Read what data the app says it collects. Apple says developers fill in those answers themselves and are responsible for keeping them accurate.
- Account. If the app asks you to sign up, find out why. An account can mean a cloud copy.
- Price. Look for in-app purchases and trials. See free photo vault apps.
- Recovery. Look for a recovery key or a clear statement that none exists.
Hide photos step by step
-
Download from the official store
Use the Apple App Store on iPhone or Google Play on Android. Do not install from a link in a message or a web ad.
-
Set your code and recovery
Pick a code you can remember. If the app offers a recovery key, write it on paper. Do not save it as a photo or note on the same phone.
-
Test with one harmless photo
Import a photo you do not mind losing. Close the app, restart the phone, and check that you can open it again.
-
Test the way out
Export that photo back to your gallery. If you cannot get it out, do not put real photos in.
-
Import the real photos
Add them in small batches. Check each batch opens.
-
Delete the originals
Delete them from your gallery, then empty its Recently Deleted or Trash area. The vault holds a copy, so the original is the only other place they live.
-
Check the cloud
If your gallery syncs to iCloud Photos or Google Photos, the pictures may already be uploaded. Delete them there too, or they stay readable in your cloud account.
Where the photo can still be after you import
| Place | Why a copy may be there | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your gallery | Importing copies the photo and leaves the original | Delete the original |
| Recently Deleted or Trash | Deleted photos wait there before they are removed | Empty it |
| Cloud photo library | iCloud Photos or Google Photos may have uploaded it already | Delete it there too |
| Phone backup | A backup made earlier may hold the original | Replace the backup after you clean up |
| Chats and email | Photos you sent stay in those threads | Search and delete them |
Keep it working over time
- After a phone update, open the app and check that one photo still opens.
- Before you replace or reset the phone, export what you need. A vault may not move to a new phone with the rest of your data. Ask the developer how restore works before you rely on it.
- If you cancel a paid plan, export first, and check what the app lets you open after a plan ends.
- Keep a list of what is inside, so you can tell if something is missing.
What the disguise leaves open
- The app is still on your phone. App lists and purchase history show apps by name.
- The stored files are only as safe as the app's own protection. A calculator face adds none.
- A backup of your phone may include the vault app's data, or the originals you imported earlier.
- If you lose the code and the app has no recovery, the photos are gone. See forgot vault password.
More on this in calculator vault apps.
Plain alternatives that need no extra app
- iPhone. Press and hold a photo in Photos, tap Hide. The Hidden album is locked by default and opens with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Android. Move photos into Locked Folder in Google Photos. It uses your device screen lock.
- iPhone app lock. Recent iOS versions can require Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode to open an app. That locks the app. It is not a photo vault. See app lock vs vault.
Full steps: how to hide photos.
If the photos are on a Mac
On a Mac the options are the Photos Hidden album and an encrypted disk image. The private photo vault guide builds one with built-in tools. This guide does not cover phone apps on a Mac.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to hide photos in a calculator app?
It depends on the app. The calculator face adds no protection. Check how the app stores files, what it backs up and how recovery works.
How do I get my hidden photos back?
Unlock the app and use its export or save option. Test this with one photo before you move the rest.
What if I forget the code?
Recovery depends on the app. Some offer a recovery key or an account reset, and some offer nothing. Check before you rely on it.
Do the photos stay in my gallery?
Often yes, until you delete the originals. Check Recently Deleted or Trash too.
Can I hide photos on iPhone without a calculator app?
Yes. Use the Hidden album in Photos. Apple says it is locked by default and needs Face ID or Touch ID to open.
Does a calculator vault work on a Mac?
Phone calculator vaults are built for phones, and a store page says whether a Mac version exists. For a Mac, use the Hidden album, an encrypted disk image or a Mac vault app.
