What Is a Vault App? How Photo and File Vaults Work

Updated Oct 30, 2026 5 min read
Quick answer

A vault app keeps chosen photos, videos or files behind a lock of its own, apart from your normal gallery. Some vault apps only hide files. Better ones encrypt them. Most run on phones. The Hidden Folder app is for Mac only, is not released, and does not run on a phone.

Phone steps follow Apple and Google help pages, and menu names differ by version. Mac steps use macOS 14 and later names.

What a vault app does

A vault app is a private room inside your device. You add photos, videos or documents, and the app keeps them behind a PIN, pattern, password or fingerprint. Your normal gallery stops showing them, as long as you delete the originals.

People use many names for the same idea: gallery vault, photo vault, phone vault, secret vault, hidden vault app, digital vault and secure vault app. The name tells you what the app is for. It does not tell you how well the app protects anything.

Hide, lock and encrypt are three different jobs

A lock screen is not the same as encryption
WordWhat happensCan someone read the file without your PIN?
HideThe file disappears from the gallery or from FinderYes, if they know where to look
LockThe app asks for a PIN or fingerprint before it opensIt depends. A lock screen does not by itself scramble the stored file
EncryptThe file is scrambled with a keyNo, not without the key

Some vault apps also keep a copy on a server, often called a cloud vault app. That is a backup question, and the checklist below covers it.

A vault app can do one of these jobs or all three. Many only hide and lock, which is why the word "secure" in a store listing tells you little. Read how to hide files on Mac for why hiding is weak, and how to encrypt a folder on Mac for what real encryption looks like.

How a typical vault app works

  1. You open the app and set a PIN, pattern or password.
  2. You import photos, videos or files. The app stores its own copy in private storage.
  3. The original usually stays in your gallery until you delete it. Check the Recently Deleted or Trash area of your gallery app as well.
  4. You unlock the app to view items. A careful app decodes them in memory. A careless one writes a readable copy to temporary storage.
  5. If you forget the PIN, recovery depends on the app. Some use an account, some a written key, some offer nothing.

Built-in options to try first

Phones and Macs already include a way to hide photos. These facts come from Apple and Google help pages.

Built-in hiding options, from Apple and Google help pages

iPhone and iPadHidden album in PhotosLocked by default. Face ID or Touch ID opens it (iOS 16 and later)With iCloud Photos, hidden items are hidden on your other devices too. They stay in your library

Steps for each are in how to hide photos. A closer look at the Mac option is in Hidden album vs a vault. If you want to lock an app rather than store files, read app lock vs vault.

What to check before you install one

  • Who made it. Find a developer name and a real website. Read the App Privacy section on the store page. Apple says developers supply those answers themselves.
  • How it protects files. Look for a named method and a written explanation, not only the word "secure".
  • Where the backup goes. An account or cloud backup means your files leave the device. Ask whether they are encrypted first.
  • What happens if you forget the PIN. See forgot vault password.
  • What free really costs. See free photo vault apps.
  • What the disguise does. A calculator icon hides the app, not the files. See calculator vault apps.

On a Mac you can run a hands-on check with the vault app test, and verify a download with the download safety guide.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the originals in the gallery, so the photos are in two places.
  • Keeping the recovery key on the same device, inside the same vault, or in a screenshot.
  • Assuming a disguise or a lock screen means the files are encrypted.
  • Never testing the export or the recovery route until the day you need it.
  • Forgetting that the gallery may sync to a cloud library that the vault does not touch.

Vault apps on a Mac

Most vault apps are for phones. A Mac has the Photos Hidden album, an encrypted disk image and a few third-party tools. The photo vault app guide lists them and how to judge each one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a vault app?

An app that stores photos, videos or files behind its own lock, away from your normal gallery. Some only hide files. Some encrypt them.

Is a calculator vault a different kind of app?

It is a vault app with a calculator on its icon and lock screen. The disguise changes how it looks, not how files are stored.

Are vault apps safe?

It depends on the app. Look for real encryption, no readable copies, a recovery route you control and a developer you can identify.

Does a vault app delete my originals?

Many import a copy and leave the original. Check your gallery after importing, and empty its Recently Deleted or Trash area.

Does Apple have a vault app?

Apple documents built-in options instead: a locked Hidden album in Photos, and on recent iPhone versions a way to lock or hide an app.

Which vault app is best?

No honest ranking exists without testing against your needs. Use the checks above and run the Mac test before you trust any app.
