Apps to Hide Pictures and Videos: Which Kind Fits Your Situation

Updated Oct 30, 2026 5 min read
Quick answer

The right way to hide pictures and videos depends on who you hide them from. For a quick glance, the Hidden album on iPhone and Mac or Locked Folder in Google Photos on Android is enough. For someone who knows your passcode, you need encrypted storage with its own key. Pick the kind by situation, then test the app.

Start with who you hide them from

Match the tool to the person you hide from
SituationWhat you needKind of tool
Someone glances at your phoneA lock in front of the picturesThe Hidden album (Apple) or Locked Folder (Google Photos)
Someone knows your passcode or Mac loginA lock with its own key, not your device unlockAn encrypted container, or a vault app that has its own lock
You do not want the pictures syncedStorage outside your Photos syncA separate container. Apple says hiding on one device hides on the others, so photos still sync.

Read the table from the first row down. Earlier rows need less effort and give less protection. Later rows need a tool with its own key, and that gives you more to manage, such as a password you must not lose.

Decide in four steps

  1. Name the person or the risk

A friend, a partner, a child, a thief, a cloud account break-in. Write it down. It decides everything else.

  2. Pick a row from the table

If your row says your device unlock is enough, use a built-in album. If not, choose storage with its own key.

  3. Test with a dummy file

Hide a harmless picture. Then try to find it the way the other person would: search, gallery, file manager and app list.

  4. Remove the originals and check backups

In Photos, Apple says deleted items stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Apple also says photos are not duplicated in your iCloud backup, so keep backup copies of your library.

Built-in options first

  • Hidden album (iPhone, iPad, Mac). Apple locks it by default. It unlocks with Face ID, Touch ID, a passcode or your Mac login password. See the Hidden album guide.
  • Lock or hide an app (iPhone). Apple lets you require Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode to open many apps. Hidden apps move to a Hidden folder in App Library. The names can still show in Screen Time and App Store purchase history.
  • Locked Folder (Android). Google Photos protects it with your screen lock. Items you do not back up exist only on that device. See secret photo albums.

When you need an app

Apps that hide pictures and videos include vaults, locker apps and calculator disguises. Some encrypt the files. Some only hide them behind a PIN. A disguise hides the app, not the data. Before you install one:

  1. Read the app's own site for the encryption method.
  2. Find out who can reset your access.
  3. Check what it sends off your device, including backups and analytics.
  4. Check where the app comes from. See how to check a vault app download.

Background: what is a vault app, calculator vault apps and Keepsafe alternatives by category. This site does not rank apps.

What no app can do

  • It cannot take back a picture you already sent.
  • It cannot protect pictures on a device that stays unlocked in someone else's hands.
  • It cannot help if the same PIN opens your phone and the vault, and the other person knows it.
  • It cannot remove copies in iCloud, Google Photos or a backup that you did not delete.

On a Mac

Most apps in this category are phone apps. On a Mac your options are the Hidden album, an encrypted disk image and tools such as Cryptomator. Start with hide videos on Mac, private photo vault and how to password protect a folder on Mac. The photo vault guide compares them. Whatever you choose, delete the originals, empty Recently Deleted and check your Time Machine backups for plain copies.

Frequently asked questions

Which app should I use to hide pictures and videos?

It depends on who you hide them from. This site does not rank apps. Use the situation table, then test the app you choose.

Does the Hidden album hide photos from iCloud?

No. Apple says that with iCloud Photos, photos you hide on one device are hidden on your other devices. They still sync.

Can an app hide pictures from someone who knows my passcode?

Only if it has its own key. The Hidden album unlocks with your device unlock, so it does not stop someone who has your passcode.

Are free apps that hide photos safe?

We cannot say for any app. Check the developer, the permissions and the encryption wording on its own page. See the vault app download guide.

Do I need a separate app on Android?

Not always. Google Photos has a Locked Folder on Android 6 and later. It uses your screen lock.

How do I hide videos?

In Photos, hide a video the same way as a photo. For video files in Finder, see the guide on hiding videos on Mac.
