Apps Like Keepsafe: Alternatives by Category and How to Test Them

Updated Oct 30, 2026 5 min read
Quick answer

Apps like Keepsafe fall into four categories: the built-in hidden album on your phone or Mac, an encrypted container you make yourself, general file encryption tools, and other phone vault apps. Which fits depends on your device and who you hide from. This page names no winner and shows how to test any option.

What Keepsafe says it is

Keepsafe's site presents Photo Vault, an app that protects photos, videos and documents. Its downloads are for iPhone and Android, and the page we read does not mention a Mac app. It says access is locked behind a PIN and that items are backed up privately. It uses a marketing phrase for its encryption and does not name the method. It has an Open Source link to a GitHub page and shows no prices. Details and the date we checked are on the Keepsafe comparison.

Four categories of alternatives

Keepsafe is one example of a phone app that puts photos, videos and documents behind its own lock. The options below are grouped by how they work. They are not ranked.

Which category fits which situation

  • A quick lock on a phone you carry: a built-in album is free and already installed.
  • Someone knows your phone passcode: pick storage with its own key, such as an encrypted container or a vault app with a separate lock.
  • Photos you also want in the cloud: encrypt them first, then let the cloud sync the encrypted file.
  • A Mac: the vault apps above are phone apps, so use a built-in album, a disk image or a file encryption tool.

Vaultaire's site also says anonymous usage and crash data are on by default and can be switched off. This site is not affiliated with Keepsafe, Vaultaire or Private Photo Vault.

How to test any vault app

  1. Read the app's own privacy page

Does it name the encryption method? A slogan is not a method.

  2. Find out who holds the key

If a reset works without your recovery key or phrase, someone else can open your data.

  3. Check how backup works

Is the backup encrypted on your device before it uploads? Where does it go?

  4. Look at analytics and permissions

Find whether usage or crash data is sent by default, and what the app asks to access.

  5. Try it with a dummy photo

Lock a test photo, then try to find it in your gallery, in search and in the file manager.

  6. Test recovery

Forget the PIN on a test vault. Learn what happens before you store anything real.

The photo vault checklist and how to check a vault app download cover the same ground in more detail. Apps to hide pictures and videos helps you choose by situation.

If you are moving off Keepsafe

  • Export your items from the app first. Check Keepsafe's own help pages for how. This site cannot say.
  • Open the exported files in the new place before you delete anything.
  • Delete the old copies and any old backup once you have confirmed the new ones work.
  • If the old app kept a cloud copy, delete that too if you want it gone.
